Frequently Asked Questions About Retirement Planning

Should I roll over my 401k,or IRA

The answer varies depending on how large the fees are on your current investments. Oftentimes rolling over multiple accounts into one investment is a smart move because it simplifies things for you and allows you to get a lower rate by investing more assets in one place. Each situation is different, but this is a question we’d love to help you answer. We would be happy to give you a free fee analysis to see how much you’re paying in management fees now and whether or not you could get a better rate.

When should I start recieving Social Security Benefits

The decision of when to start taking Social Security benefits is very complex. The answer varies depending on whether or not you have a company pension or annuity, how much savings you have, how you expect your investments to perform, how long you expect to live, and how much you expect to spend every year. To really give you an informed answer for your unique situation, we recommend our retirement planning services.

When should I dial back the risk in my portfolio?

Hopefully you’ve been dialing back the risk in your portfolio gradually as you get nearer and nearer to retirement age. You should be doing this because the older you are, the less time you have to bounce back from a recession. A good rule of thumb is to only invest in stocks a percentage of your assets that is equal to or less than 100 minus your age. For example, if you’re 30, then you can invest 70% of your assets in the stock market with the rest in bonds, government securities, and other “safe assets.” If you’re 70, then you should invest no more than 30% of your assets in the stock market with the rest in conservative investments. This is a general rule and not a recommendation from us on your particular situation. For a more specific recommendation, contact us to hear more about our financial planning services.

Are retirement planning and financial planning the same thing?

Retirement planning and financial planning go hand in hand. Our retirement planning services are offered in the form of a comprehensive financial plan. This allows us to consider your entire unique situation when offering our comprehensive advice.

Do you help with estate planning as well?

Yes, we will help you with the estate planning process from start to finish. This is also part of our comprehensive financial planning service. We will make recommendations on how best to preserve and pass on your legacy whether it be to your children, grandchildren, or charity, all while minimizing taxes. While we are not lawyers, we are connected with excellent lawyers in town who can draft all the legal documents you will need (primarily a will or trust) for a very fair price.
